Actuarial Science and the NFL
by shoebootie

I know I am a little late to the party in commenting on the Colts' incomprehensible decision to quit on a perfect season.  But after hearing Colts management explain their reasons for pulling the starters in the middle of the 3rd quarter in a close game, I have questions.  How did they determine when to pull them?  Do they have an actuary on staff that crunched the numbers, and determined that 2-1/2 quarters is the ideal balance to avoid injury while still keeping players sharp for the post season?  Is the risk of injury greater in the last 1-1/2 quarters of a "meaningless" game than the first 2-1/2?  Just wondering.

...so I had a shoe on one foot there and a boot on the other. A shoe and a boot. So the kids call me 'Shoebootie'.

Beer: Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout
by DrRaoulDuke

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout

I've been drinking Brooklyn Brewery's Black Chocolate Stout for years. It's a seasonal brew that is only brewed during the winter season. First off, there is no chocolate in this beer. I don't drink beer with chocolate in it. The chocolate refers to the shade of the malted barley roast. Stouts are ales that are brewed with a very dark malt roast. This particular stout is an imperial stout. Imperial stouts use a tremendous amount of malt leading to a tremendous body and tremendous amount of alcohol. This is my favorite Imperial stout. Enough sweetness without being too sweet. Hopped mildly but enough to counteract the thick malty sweetness. Tons of body. Lots of alcohol (10% for 2009). I am noticing clove for the first time this year but it is a welcome addition to this powerhouse of flavor. 9/10

Glenn Beck Wants to Go Back to 77% Top Tax Bracket
by DrRaoulDuke

Remember a few months ago when Glenn Beck wept while remembering the America he grew up in? It was an America with a large middle class. A middle class that could afford two cars, a home, and send their kids to college. A happy and BIG middle class. Well part of those "simpler times" was a top tax bracket of 77% in 1964 (the year Beck was born). It hovered around 70% until Reagan started the destruction of the middle class in 1981. History of US Taxes.
